Philips Original Radio

Philips Original Radio combines retro design and advanced technology

Design inspired by an icon: the 1950s classic Philetta radio

Berlin, Germany – Philips has pioneered sound in the home since the 1920s. The new Philips Original Radio takes a 1950s Philips design icon and reimagines it as a range of advanced radios and docking stations that deliver a great sound experience for today’s listener. The Philips Original Radio comes in a range of options that includes iPhone/iPod docking, DAB+ digital radio and FM radio.

Philips produced its millionth radio in 1932 and went on to lead the industry with the introduction of the cassette tape, the compact disc and DAB digital radio. A hugely popular design in the history of Philips radio is the Philetta 254 from 1955, the iconic design which is the inspiration behind the Philips Original Radio.

“Today’s listener has a big range of options for where they get their content from, but radio continues to be a popular medium. For example, here in Germany, over 58 million people listen to over four hours of radio during the day¹,” said Edouard Petit, marketing manager Audio at Philips. “With the Philips Original Radio we’re showcasing our heritage in audio in a range of products that give a great sound experience and also include docking for convenient playback from iPhones and iPods”.

The radio is extremely versatile, making it a great asset for any home. Whether it is in the kitchen, the bathroom or the living room, the Philips Original Radio brings vintage glamour to any setting. The black front and the premium wooden casing form the framework for the radio's high-quality finish. Two aluminum knobs on the front are used to control the volume and playback option. The date, time and name of the current track are digitally displayed on the front*.

Philips’ sound technology not only ensures crystal-clear high and low tones, but also a powerful bass. Two 10-Watt-powered speakers transport impressive sounds into the room. The DAB+ digital radio standard guarantees excellent audio quality and a variety of stations to choose from*. Precise fine tuning provides a balanced musical experience which can be controlled simply using an iPod or iPhone*. As well as receiving global radio stations, you can use the dock to play all your music from your iPod or iPhone*.
